Spotlight on our friend Miyoko
Miyoko was born November 20, 1926, in Yokohama, Japan. Where she lived for 34 years. There she met her husband John, who was serving in the U.S. Navy. She worked in her aunt’s restaurant and served him what she calls “Noodles”. That was the beginning of a beautiful life together. In 1960 they arrived in NYC where she became a US citizen. Shortly thereafter, he took her to San Juan where she remained for the next 10 years.
Miyoko adapted to the island around her and became very close to her husbands family, since he was away traveling from port to port. They taught her how to cook Spanish food. Soon enough, she was driving around the island making many friends. She loved to entertain and introduce friends to her wonderful Japanese cooking. She also enjoyed shopping and was always dressed in style. She also enjoyed go out for fine dining, the beautiful beaches, and the night life.
Miyoko now resides with Susan, whom she met through her husband. He was Miyoko’s mailman. Miyoko and Susan instantly became great friends. Years later Miyoko and John became Godparents to Susan’s twins, Kenneth and Johnathan.
In 1984 her husband John retired from the Navy after 30 years of service. The two of them started their life together again by taking a much needed trip to Japan to visit friends and family. In 1987 they decided to leave San Juan and move St. Augustine, Florida. Together they got involved in their community and volunteering in their church. This is where Miyoko took up gardening, flower arranging, baking and quilt making. Sadly, John passed away in November 1998. Miyoko moved to Deltona to be closer to Susan and all her family, who loves her.
